Sew Frugal

I love to sew. I have to admit I have not sewn too much lately, but the last thing I did sew was from a vintage sewing pattern that I had found in a huge box of sewing patterns that I got from thrift store for $2.00 for the whole box. I found a lot of treasures in that box of about 90 sewing patterns. This pattern was one of them. I had just enough fabric to make the sleeveless one. The fabric was from a VERY soft t-shirt fabric twin sheet that I had gotten at a yard sale for 10 cents!! It was soft enough and had enough flow to it that the cowl neckline lays perfect. It only took me about 20 minutes to cut out and sew.

You can find a lot of cowl neckline top sewing patterns on ebay. This is a sewing pattern that you will use a lot. Make them in every color and in different patterns.

Halloween on a Budget!

With Halloween just around the corner, it can be tempting to just buy yet another pre-packaged Halloween costume. But, you don't have to! Your costume can be unique.. it just takes a little creativity and inspiration! Below are a couple of projects I've been working on. Actually, they didn't take much time at all. I knew I wanted to DIY my Halloween costume this year, as I wanted my costume to be special and unique. In addition, it's a lot of fun and, if you are careful, very cheap! FYI, I've decided to be a sorceress. So, with some easy to find outdoor items, a hot glue gun, some miscellaneous jewels, geodes (crystals which are incredibly easy to find here in Indiana), a hammer, and some paint, I was able to create a necessary component to my Halloween costume -For basically free!

The first project was a simple wand. I literally found a stick and I painted it purple. Any color will do. The prism crystal at the top of the wand was a pendant from one of my necklaces. The gold chain that you can see wrapped around the wand is actually the necklace that pendant came off of. The reflecting blue and orange "jewels" that you see on the wand were removed from a purse that I no longer use (bought at Goodwill forever ago).  The two white pieces are pieces of a geode, after I smashed it to pieces with a hammer. :p All glued down with the help of a hot glue gun, as hot glue really holds everything in place very well. Again, this is my vision. It could look entirely different. But, it looks pretty darn cool for not really costing me anything!

This is the second project; a magic staff! I must have looked forever for the perfect walking stick and I finally found one. Height depends on what you want, but make sure it is sturdy and dry. I decided not to paint this or anything, as I like the natural look better. I smashed up a couple of geode chunks I had found at a creek/out in the country during the summer (so as to expose really white, clean parts of the crystals) and simply hot glued them onto and around the top of the walking stick, in a formation that i was happy with. I then put a bracelet around that part, just cause it looks cool and magical. :p The jewels came from the same purse mentioned above (with the wand), And the gold that you see is just some string confetti (like what you find at the base of a balloon) wrapped around the stick for decoration.

So, as you can see, Halloween can be both magical and cheap! So, get creative!

A lazy Day

Have been so busy. Not written on here much, and feel bad about it. Will make it up with tons of great post.

It has been cool here, not too cool, but cool enough to be able to wear the heck out of my denim jackets.

Today I wore it with just a plain white t-shirt , pair of blue skinny jeans, and an infinity scarf. Very comfortable and looked great.

And, sorry about the photo. Every time I do a blog post on my laptop, it flips the photos on their side. Even when I try and edit it to where it should flip it right side up. It never does.

You Can Never Have Enough Shoes!

You have to have as many pairs of shoes as possible!! They make an outfit.  You can find great shoes at thrift stores and yard sales. I only buy ones that I know are new. You can tell. My daughter has even gotten lucky and gotten shoes that are still in the box with tags attached for next to nothing.

This great pair of Born shoes was given to me. FREE!! Brand spanking new!! Just too big for them so I got them. Look great with jeans and super comfortable.

This pair I got at a yard sale for $1.00!! New in the box. She bought them and then got home and did not like the 2.5 inch heel.

So, see , you can buy great shoes! Be frugal and stylish!

Halloween!! What To Wear??

Halloween is so much fun, but it is also a hard holiday. What do you want to go as? It is hard to decide. There are so many ideas and costumes out there. Even for the puppy! Too many to choose from.  It is so much fun to dress up for Halloween. Try to go to as many Halloween parties as possible so that we can dress up in something different to each one.

Comfort Wins Out

I just wanted to be comfortable today and it is getting warm again. Not for long, but this week we are having a warm up after being in the 50's during day and 30's at night. It is in 70's. So I got my favorite khaki crop pants and my olive green shirt. They both were from yard sale for 50 cents each and the Dog Birkenstocks I actually got for 25 cents at a yard sale. I had bought them to give to my mom, but I tried them on when I got home and they fit. Her tiny foot would fall out of these. So they are mine. This is a day for comfort and here it is.

This is one of my favorite tops. I love the cute ties at the shoulders. The lady at the yard sale I got this from told me that she was selling it because when she washed it the first time something messed up the one shoulder tie. I thought for 50 cents I would try it. I got it home and sure enough all it needed was to be re-laced.  Now it is perfect. Has been washed several times and no problems.

My favorite hack around shoes!! But, my real dog, Oscar the Puggle, attacks my feet every time I wear these. Not sure why. He has done it ever since I got them. Maybe he is jealous of this cute puppy??

Jeans, Stripes, & Boots

Cooler weather means to get out the cardigans!

I have this one from a thrift store - another $1.00 find. It is a cute striped cardigan. Wore it with a pink t-shirt that was a yard sale find. 25 cents. This was a great set for my skinny jeans and my gray boots. Which were made for skinny jeans, I think. Perfect!

The perfect cardigan with the perfect boots & jeans. My favorite new outfit.

Halloween Frugal Tricky Style

I am not embarrassed to say that I shop at The Dollar Tree! I get all of my cleaning supplies there. Sometimes they have some great items there. Like this book. Halloween With Matthew Mead: Style made shockingly simple. It is full of DIY ideas to make your own Halloween decoration for your home and even some recipes.

You could easily buy things at thrift store and turn them into a fun Halloween decor item. Like get a bird statue and get some black spray paint to paint it black. Set it up on your shelf for a spooky Edgar Allen Poe effect.

Look at thrift store for vintage photographs or paintings that  you could altar into a spooky wall hanging. Use plastic spiders and bugs even. Halloween is the one holiday that you can have a ton of fun with your decor.

It does not have to cost a lot of money to decorate your home for any holiday.

Fun Thrifting Day!

Yesterday was a fun day. Went with daughter and mom out of town for some thrift store shopping and lunch. We found a small thrift store that was having a sale on their clothing - ALL CLOTHING $1.00 EACH!! But, did not find a lot. Found me some hoodies. Found this amazing skirt that I found a black denim jacket to wear with! Looks great together and only cost $2.00. I spent $12.00 in that thrift store.

The black denim jacket looks great with it , but I can see my other denim jackets with it and a few of my tops.  I have a white sweater, that I need to dig out of my winter clothes, that will look great with this skirt.

This long skirt has some amazing color and detail at the bottom.

Save BIG on Wedding Stuff!!

Last year, the average wedding cost was $31,213, excluding a honeymoon (The Knot). If you think that is ridiculous, welcome to the club!

It is important to remember that your wedding day is just ONE DAY. More importantly, it is about the love between your husband and yourself - it is not about spending loads of money and showing off.  And, for those who are not willing to spend some people's annual salary on one day alone, there are luckily ways to save money on your special day!

For example, I saw the wedding dress pictured below at a local Goodwill today. Such a gorgeous dress and for only $100, it is quite the steal! A similar looking David's Bridal Wedding Dress can be found for over $1200!!

So, if you take anything away from this post, I hope it is that you do not have to break the bank in order to show and celebrate your love for your special someone! Getting married soon? Know someone who is? Hit up flea markets and thrift shops and SAVE BIG for the BIGGEST day of your life! :) <3

Books, books, books!!

If you are a bookworm like me and prefer to buy and keep your books, as opposed to borrowing them from your local library, thrift shops are gold mines for cheap reading material.  I found all of these astrology and sci-fi books at a nearby Goodwill today -  all for .99 or less each! So roughly $5 for a lot of books that I'm sure will keep me occupied for some time.

In addition, the Goodwill's near us have book sales on Thursdays and Saturdays. On those days, paperbacks are 3 for .99! So, definitely check out your local Goodwill for cheap, interesting reads and potential booksales -  so that you may tickle your imaginative fancy, yet keep more money in your wallet! :)
